In Poland, Once

Temporarily yours this endless blue,
these headless chickens, the chipped coffee cup
on the kitchen table. What lasts forever
but the stench of burning horsehair or the sound
of a boot grinding your great-grandfather’s cheek
to the ground, outside the ruined stable?
